I have just gotten another hard disk (WD Caviar black 640GB) I enjoy gaming and run some graphics programs, Vue and poser, on pc #1. #2 pc is used for school (computer science degree) but wouldn't mind consolodating. The one delima that I have for not consolidating is that I'm running umbuntu on the school pc and win vista on the gaming pc. I know there are ways to make this sort of thing work through partitions but I am not sure how that would effect the second disk if I were to say set up a RAID 0 with win vista as the main os. Do I need the full disk to most effectivly set up stripping? (i would keep a portion of disk 1 partitioned for umbuntu.) Or if I use a RAID 1 set up is there going to be a problem when running two os? Or would it be better to run win on one disk and umbuntu on another and forget a raid set up all together?
Please let me know if this question makes any sense and where I might be able to get some more in depth reading on RAID.

Partitions will not affect your striping of a RAID 0. I currently run 2 partitions (both NTFS) on my 4-drive RAID-5 setup with no issues. If you have a modern Intel motherboard with an ICH10 southbridge, you can even setup different types of RAID (i.e. one RAID 0 partition, and one RAID 1 partition) on the same set of drives.
The most important thing to consider is can you setup Ubuntu to understand your RAID configuration. If you can get Ubuntu and your RAID controller to play nicely, then there should be no issue creating a RAID 0 or RAID 1 and using two separate partitions.
