I've been working on deciding parts for making a low power computer solution for the past couple weeks, but I'm unsure about which motherboards are really power efficient or low power.

This computer will be used as an IRC logger, possible idle downloader, and a RAID 1, 5, or 0+1 box for NAS storage at some point as well. The only thing hindering me is a motherboard choice for me to continue on my planning.

AMD or Intel don't matter, but I'd prefer AMD for a low power Sempron or Athlon X2. I'd prefer a smaller form factor, but still something which can fit a RAID controller card on if the motherboard itself doesn't have 4 SATA ports on board.

Also, on some of these RAID cards I see Interface: PCI Express Lanes: 4. Which slot would that fit in, a PCIe x16?

If it's not too much either I would greatly appreciate an idea on reliable brands for a sub $150 RAID card with 4 SATA connections.

Very much appreciated.

The new 7xx chipsets from AMD are very energy efficient from my experience if your not going to buy an graphics card go for the 780G chipset in the micro-atx form factor its the perfect balance between performance/price.

Their is cheaper one's but this seems to be reliable and gets good reviews:-

Also supermicro make good products so have a look at them for your raid card.
