More Information

Well I finally got my computer assembled but now I am experiencing random freezes. I will give you my specs first:

Corsair 1000W PSU
Gigabyte X48 DQ6 mobo
2 X 2 gigabytes Mushkin Redline 1000mhz RAM
Radeon HD4870 X 2 Crossfire
Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme
Seagate Barracuda 320 GB hdd
Windows XP SP3

I am experiencing random crashes that MAY be memory related? When I go to Control Panel -> System it tells me I only have 2.75 gigs of ram even though I really do have 4. It seems the more I do with the computer the faster it freezes. If I have something less intensive running it will also freeze but it will just take longer.

The screen freezes and the hdd stops accessing. Maybe I have the RAM installed wrong? I have them in a dual channel configuration.

It only shows 2.75Gb because a 32bit Os is only capable of addressing a total of 4Gb. This includes the 1Gb for your GPU's, sound card, BIOS and everything else in your system.

Check in the BIOS that your timing and voltage settings are in line with what Mushkin suggests and test it with Memtest.

Also, what are your temps and have you overclocked anything?

Is it possible to run memtest from a usb? Trying to do it atm but not much luck. I haven't oc'd anything yet and will check temps soon.

It should be...

Here is a thread that looks promising.
With the price of CDRs being what it is, it probably would not hurt to burn a copy off.

Hmmm in BIOS it says my memory frequency is 800 Mhz even though it is supposed to be 1000 Mhz. The timing also reads 5-5-5-18 when it is supposed to be 5-5-5-12.

Alright, chang it either to 800Mhz 4-4-4-12 or, if you have the option, 1000Mhz 5-5-5-12. Then find the RAM voltage setting and change it to 2.1V.

I can't see the memory voltage, it only shows me that I can set it to normal+0.05 normal+0.10 and so on. Now I am having trouble setting the RAM values backto their defaults as I am now crashing inside the BIOS.

I think you have to press some sort of key combo to get all the settings in your BIOS. I would like to say it is <ctl> + <F1> but you may want to check in your manual. If you want to get everyting back to default, there should be a command to restore default settings. Worst case, you can shut down and jump the clear CMOS jumper.

It is probably giving you 1.8V standard, so try setting it at +0.3V.

Will try to run the memory diagnostic next but it doesn't seem to be able to read the cd, sigh. Also, cpu-z is reporting now that my processor is at 2.00 ghz, 6 X 333 instead of 8 X 333.

That is normal.
All newer Intel CPU's will switch to a 6x multiplier when under a low load to save power. With CPU-Z open, run something that requires a decent ammount of CPU useage. You should see it switch from 6x to 8x and to your propper speed.

Ah, good to know. I will try removing one of the ram sticks to see if that helps.

I switched the places where I put the RAM and I thought the problem was fixed. I was actually able to play a game for 5 minutes before another crash came :(

Ya really need to get memtest working.
Then you can test each stick and see if any of them are bad.
Just use a program like nero to burn the memtest86+ image as a bootable Cd and restart with it in the drive. As long as your system is set to boot from your DVD drive before the Hd, everything else should be automatic.
