1) S3 is the closest thing I could think of as a competetor to ATI/nVidia. Their latest cards are competitive at low end only.
2) Price -vs- Performance is usually the best place to start.
BTW, Intel is not a GPU manufacturer yet. Their current offerings are all massivly under powered intigrated graphics.

For the record also 3DFX, S3 (VIA), Matrox. Not very active except for VIA.
3Dfx is still making cards?!?
I had thought they were boxed when nVidia bought them out after the failed Voodo 4/5 lines?

Two types of manufacturers must be distinguished:
GPU and IGP Manufacturers
Current GPU manufacturers:
AMD (acquired ATI in 2006)
NVIDIA
Matrox
Current IGP-only manufacturers:
Intel
VIA Technologies (acquired S3 Graphics in 2001)
