ICH9 v. ICH9R.... It is Intel Matrix storage technology (Raid) that is the reason for the difference in naming. I'm not sure if the Specs are different. From the Picture the "R" board has better CPU VRM (more power phases) circuitry on the "R" Board.
The R has RAID. It also has 8 SATA ports instead of 4, and comes with 4 SATA cables instead of 2. Both are rather old, with PCI-E 1 slots. If you don't need RAID, get the GA-EP43-DS3L. If you do, GA-EP45-DS3R.

There are not more power phases on the "R" board? Better PWM / VRM circuits make overclocking quads easier.
From a performance point of view, they are the same. The R has Raid capability, and 6 sata ports, instead of 4. I think the rear USB ports are now the same. Go to the Gigabyte web site where you can select a side by side listing of all the features.

"Today only Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L and GA-P35-S3L feature simple processor voltage regulator circuitry, all other models from S3 series feature 6-phase circuitry"
Gigabyte says: For GA-P35-DS3R
1. Ultra Durable 2 Motherboard
2. All Japanese manufactured solid
3. Over-clocking Enhanced
But for GA-P35-DS3L
1. Ultra Durable Motherboard
2. Over-clocking Enhanced
There are More MOSFETs and ferrites on the "R" Board around the processor. It is a better design. The GA-P35-DS3L is a budget design. I would not get it for a quad.
