ok well it seems the my old system may have bit the dust. so I got this dell for a backup. I was just wondering what kind of upgrades could it take?? I took a quick look inside and everything seems normal enough, dont know if everythings proprietary in there or not. it currently is running a p4 2.8 520, its a socket 775 90mn processor, its a 915 chipset rev b1. whats the max I can put in it. I believe the current power supply thats in it is a dell 250w, I have a enermax 485w that I could get out of the old computer if it would fit into the dell case. what do you all think?

well if these are the correct specs:http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/915g/index.htm

there is not a lot you can do. you can get a better graphics card ( with the 480watt that you have you might be able to run a 4850) with the processor and ram you are limited by bus speed. you could probably move up to like a Pentium D or the E2160 ( which the 2180 is supposed to overclock really really well) for ram well you have to stick to ddr2 533MHz. if you want me to send you some links to ram and processor i can. but they are vary easy to find just go to newegg.com.

Neither the Pentium D nor the E2160 are not supported on his 915 Chipset.

Max CPU for that system would be an HT (single core) Pentium 4 570 at 3.8Ghz. But that would not be worth the trouble or expense.

yeah pretty much what I thought, probably not worth it, thanks. 1 other thing I have a 6600gt from the old system, that should be ok right??

if the dell p/s will power it. Most dells have proprietary power supplys, so i wouldnt count on being able to change it economically

I'm currently using a GX280 with a generic 500W PSU on a ATX case. Proprietary.....psssst. Cheapest gaming computer I've ever built.

Where did you get the PS and how would one know if a generic PS would fit into the GX280?

Hey carpenter940,

A regular PSU would not fit in the GX280 small factor form case. I had to rip the motherboard out of the case and attach the board to a ATX case (used metal clips and duct tape to hold it in place). The most important thing is to take the "ON" button switch with you.

Thank you mchc715,

I don't know why I didn't think of that. I have two other cases I can put that board in. I'll then have plenty of choices for a PS.
