Hi, I put a 7 GB drive from my old Win ME machine into my new Vista machine. It "sees" the drive as an empty 5 GB drive, but the drive actually has a LOT of files on it I want to access. I copied one small file hoping to "wake it up", but it didn't help. I've had the jumper set to "slave", but set it back up as "master" - still no help. It shows up as drive "D". Is there any way to recover all my old Windows ME files?
While I'm not sure how to really give you a decent answer, what happens if you put the drive in a PATA enclosure and plug it in via USB? Does it still see it as an empty drive? Could you have the drive in your ME machine and transfer the files across a network?
What may have happened is the FAT table on the drive has been corrupted, causing the VIsta machine to think the drive is empty. A good file recover software may be able to help with this. I've used several different ones in the past to help resurect data and while its not perfect, I got most of my data back. Personally I used Nucleas FAT and NTFS but there are plenty out there that will do a good job. A lot depends on the state of the hard drive though as to how successful they are.
Sorry not to be of more help, but this might help you with some things to try
