Trouble OC q6600 with Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R

I'm having trouble OC with Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R and Q6600. While I love the MOBO features I'm actually having a tougher time with it than my last board and I can't figure out why. I was running contentedly at 3.2 GHz before and now I can't get past 2.7. Everyone else seems to be having no trouble at all getting to3.2 or 3.4.

I've tried leaving the multiplier alone at 9 and incrementing the frequency in small increments but for some reason I'm hitting a wall at 300; everything I've tried above that results in alarm bells and a resetting the bios (which makes me a appreicate the quick bios recovery feature - 10 stored settings rocks).

I did try locking down the PCI bus at 100 but that is the default anyway.

I also did try working with the multiplier also with no success but from what I've read this is not the way to go and should not be necessary.


All suggestions appreciated!

  1. Is the FSB to RAM ratio at 1:1?
  2. Sam, I have the same board and chip. Did you disable C1E and EIST in the bios? The animal has a clue for you. My Q6600 runs at 9*333, fsb3/ram2=500 5,5,5,18 with no adjustments.
  3. I had no idea about the C1E and EIST settings; first I have seen of them; they were definitely most of the problem; as soon as I disabled them I posted at 9 x333 no problem. Thanks!!!!

    But it's not quite stable yet; it will lock up or bluescreen at times. And are those symptoms of a voltage boost being needed?

    But I don't think I fully implemented your instructions, or at least don't fully understand them; specifically I don't know how to translate fsb3/ram2=500 into settings or to answer the animals question about RAM ratio; the bios offers a bewildering array of clock settings but I want to understand them.

  4. Run CPU-Z and see what your RAM speed is set at.
  5. That was easy: DRAM frequency is 495 Mhz and FSB:DRAM is 2:3.

    The UD3P and UD3R are some of the best mobos for OCing quads.

    You need to change that to 1:1.
  9. As soon as I figured out how to do that (I hadn't seen that bios setting before) everything stabilized and it's running great again. It kicked butt rendering Hi-def video where previously it would lock up. Thanks much!

    This mobo is very cool but for me it's held back by a couple of things: while they do a better job of documenting bios settings than many they really aren't sufficient to someone who is intelligent but ignorent; it is almost impossible to understand the implications of changing something without asking on a forum first. So where did you guys pick it up? Is there a good web site that explains this in depth?Or is it like hacking and you just have to do it?

    Also, as a software developer I rate their utilities as bush league. You end up with mysterious services and exe's with no company info; I mean come on; if you are going to use an MSI put your bloody company name on it for crying out loud. And I only run 64 bit OS and I've found their apps to be useless at best, possibly destabiizing at worst.

    But, even though I've add a couple dead gigabyte boards before, I am happy with this one, it has room to grow. I'm going to try to push it to 3.4 Ghz next.

    Here are the settings I am using form my Q6600 I am running @3.6GHz at 1.8GHz FSB. Get a high quality cooler and a nice chassis. I use a thermalright ultra 120 extreme and the Antec 900 case with g.skill PC2-8800 DDR2.

    Wow I was already able to get 3.52GHz and was able to post at 3.6 and boot to OSX (I'm a overclockingtosh)
    But then any stress test stopt very quickly.
    I'm gonna use your settings as a guide and let you know as soon as I have a new cooler.
