I'm building a new rig and haven't settled on my video cards yet. I was planning to wait on the new cards for price drops, but I was wondering should I say nevermind and act on this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814125089

122.00 after MIR is a darn good deal for OC 8800 GT right? Or should I be still waiting for price drops and be looking at a more powerful card for around the same price?

Unforunately, it doesn't work that way. The 256mb version of GT suffers from memory problems at moderate resolutions on newer games, causing crippling fps slowdown and even crash at around 1280x1024. It's overall performance is below that of $89 8800gs. It's also not good to have a card with unstable performance no matter what.

wow thanks for point that out, for some reason I thought this was the 512mb one.

Yeah this deal is no longer a deal. Heh, thanks for making me see the light.

/facepalm

Reply to Shibumi

Don't buy it. It only has 256 MB memory. Just do a google search to compare the performance of a 256mb GT to a 512mb GT and you will see.
Even if that does not convince you, the age of 256mb gaming cards is coming to an end. I've talked to a few game developers a few weeks back and 256mb is what they are targeting as the absolute minimum. Now looking at the soon to be released cards youwill see a trend towards more memory. Even the current mid-range of AMD and nvidia have between 384 and 512 mb. I've to admit the 3850 with 256mb puts up a nice fight but in the end there is only so much it can do once it runs out of memory.
Try to get a 9600 GT, 9600 GSO or 8800GS instead if that suits your budget better.

And don't, under no circumstances, listen to Best_reviewss power index ramblings. Well, unlless you believe that eating grass and sucking on tibetan stones can cure cancer or so...

8800gt.
8+8+0+0 =16. Nor g neither t boost. But 120 is a really good price. Go for it.

Beat me to it Dagger. I just bought the EVGA 8800GT 512 for $159 so ya thats not a good deal for the 256 card.

I cant be happier with the EVGA 512 for $159. It scored 13789 in 3dmark06 with a e7200 OC to 3.6.

I sold the system for $789. Now to build another one.

That card should be fine if playing at 1200*800 or a little higher.

That also depends on the specific game and if you turn on AA. For that price tag, you shouldn't have to worry about such things. :p

I just built a system with the Superclocked version of that which I bought for $90 after MIR and I have to say it's a surprisingly good card for the money. It can't come close to competing with the GT or GTS or anything higher than that but you can't beat it for the price.

Of course. Nvidia rebranded 8800gs to 9600gso a while back. They're identical.

Ape, can't you ban him for trolling/spamming, spreading FUD? He's really starting to pi$$ off ppl. More so than Thunderman. (At least Thunderman's a fanboi trying to save AMD, so Intel won't monopolize  )

If he plays nice with other threads and keep the numerology to his original thread I don't think he should be banned.

That original thread made me smirk, I found it entertaining, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't a situation where there was "look at this" in every thread.

Hopefully everyone can play nice from here on out.

meh I found the thread to be annoying, when every1 is anticipating and waiting thats the worst thing to do...especially since I'm on Vacation for GOD SAKE I DON't want to do math!!!!! :D

Either way I booked 2 4870s and 2 280 GTXs I'll have benchmarks in about a week or 2.

I'm not going to keep the cards cuz they are just too damn exp, but if I see a big improvement over the GX2 I might change my mind!

naw they don't and to be honest, from what I read, I'm not that interested, for now even the GX2 is more than enough power for me:P

Oh come on Liquid, you and I BOTH know that the GX2 leaves something to be desired.... how bout Crysis at 1900 res. I can barely get playable frame rates at HIGH settings. Ouch. And it's not JUST Crysis, Age of Conan give it a run for the money some times as well. I know from experience.

LOL yeah your right, I still think that the GX2 will benefit when multigpu Dependant games become available:D.

My friend doesn't seem to get the flaw most ppl do from running the GX2 in quad I wonder why:S

Difference in these cards is only the factory OC right?

I should say that is the only difference.
