Hey guys, yesterday I finally decided I would OC my E8400... I have it @ 4ghz right now, and everything seems stable.

There's just one thing that worries me: Under load, the computer makes this high-pitch hissing noise... I already ruled out the fans. The sound is definitely "electrical", you know, kind of like interference, buzzing or something. It's very high-pitched (barely audible in terms of frequency, but still noticeable over the sound of the fans).

It's not from the PSU. It seems to come from somewhere around the motherboard... either, the GPU, the CPU or the motherboard itself. I've read it could be bad capacitors?

How bad is this situation? Has anyone experienced this? I've never noticed it before, so I presume this is a consequence of my current OC:

e8400 @ 4ghz

Vcore: 1.38v BIOS; 1.36v CPU-Z

CPU PLL voltage: 1.60v

FSB termination voltage: 1.30v

NB: 1.40v

RAM: 2.10v

I really need help, this is scaring me.

What MB do you have?

I'm guessing from your voltages you have an E8400 (C0 revision) since you are already above Intel's recommended max on cpu, vtt and pll voltages.

I have exactly the same thing with e5200 on p5q pro, but only in two scenarios: when crysis starts and diplays logos: EA, crytek, intel etc, and in the menus, but not in the gameplay. Other one is prime, only the smallest ffts 8 and 10k. In my case it gets more audible with higher cpu overclock, and isnt present at stock. All voltages but for vcore are on auto. Apart from that sound it runs like a dream. So far i didnt get any sensible explanation anywhere, my guess is cpu and if anything than i hope it is cpu.

I would think if this was a 45nm processor issue we would here a lot more about it, but since it happens with prime small ffts it's a possibility.

I'm wondering whether the OP has the same board now.

I have too many fans in my case to hear anything, maybe i'll quiet mine down and take a listen (different board though).

Hit the case some times. Maybe it will help :D
