My workmates computer has the old SATA1 connectors on their motherboard but want me to put a SATA2 HDD in there for them. Is the SATA2 cHDD compatible with SATA1 on the motherboard?

Yes, they are compatible.. The transfer rate will be that of Sata1.

some hard drives will require a jumper to enable sata1.
