Recently I bought a new processor. Its completely supported by my mother board and I will list my specs in a min. I normally keep my computer running 24 hrs a day.. i'm lazy and don't like to start it and wait.. plus most of the time im downloading or uploading so i just leave it on. It ran beautifully from Thursday, when i got the chip, till Saturday when I did a system check, cpu temp was 29 dg cel. Sunday I was playing a game online when it froze up and turned off completely. I turned it back on and within in seconds it turned off again. I opened up the computer and some how the heatsink fell off of the cpu and it was super hot. I waited a couple hours, put the heatsink back on and attempted to turn the computer back on. But even now the computer turns on, stays on for a minute and turns completely off. Did i kill my cpu?

Reset your bios, try again. Modern cpus have built in thermal protectors that stop overheating damage like that.

Look in the owners manual for your motherboard and it will show were the jumper clear the cmos and it is done with power off. Also if your cooler fell off make sure you clean and reapply thermal paste.

Check page 36 of your manual and press SW3 after it is off ... CMOS Reset.

Remover, clean, regrease and reeat the cpu ... then refit the HSF.

Power it up and hit del to go into the bios.

If it didn't start note ... is the fan spinning on the HSF??

It might have died.

Intel CPU's have thermal protection which is very good ... I think there is a chance it will be ok.

Kep us posted

The manual for that is here ... if you lost yours ... page 36.

^Do the above. I doubt very seriously if you damaged anything. Make sure the heatsink is ON CORRECTLY. If it fell off, you are apparently having a problem getting it seated and latched down right. I think that most heatsinks should be mounted with the board out of the case, it is nearly impossible to get them mounted correctly with the board in the case. It's a pain in the butt, but sometimes you should just pull the board and do it right.

Remove the PSU - 4 screws on the rear ... slide it out the side just far enough ... leave the cables connected tho.

Makes it easy to mount the HSF properly and check it.

Perhaps you should renew the thermal paste. Further more, check if the heatsink is seated right. Perhaps it put more pressure on one side of the CPU than the other.

Well I don't have another computer to test the chip in. I tired to reset the bios and it still didn't work. I sent it in to RMA so hopefully the new one will work....
