More Information

Hello,

I recently bought some new hardware into my PC.
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Abit IP35 motherboard
GeForce 8800GTS

Now my CPU is instantly overheating in system startup so my PC will automatically shutdown.
Fan is working and it's installed correctly (afaik). I am using Q6600 boxed fan.

Shut it down.

Open the case.

Remove the HSF and clean the base of it ... regrease the base.

Remove the CPU and clean the IHS and reapply a thin layer of TIM (cpu grease).

reseat the cpu, refit the HSF.

Check the cables inside the case are bunched together and don't restrict the airflow inside.

Check the case fans are clean - free of dust ... a small brush will help.

Doublecheck the HSF is locked down properly before firing it up.

Go into the bios (del) and check your temps as she warms up to idle.

Check the other threads on temperature problems.

If it runs a lot cooler with the side cover off the box then you need a better cooler ( a tower heatpipe job) and likely better case fans.

The Q6600 does run a bit hot ... it is a fast chip.

Hope this helps.

Let us know how you go.

Put your hand on the HSF when it shuts down, if it's cool to touch then more than likely it hasn't slotted properly unless of course you've completely made a mess of applying the thermal paste.

Vertigon:
Thermal paste comes preapplied for initial installation.

If you have difficulties installing the HSF, you may need to remove the motherboard from the case. I always recommend installing the HSF before you install the motherboard inthe case. It's easier to check for proper HSF installation.

Are you sure it's overheating? Could certainly be a dud processor if you're cooling setup is working.

"Thermal paste comes preapplied for initial installation"

I know, but do we know he hasn't lapped his cpu in etc etc? I think maybe he's worked out the problem because he sure hasn't replied.
