Hello,

I have a laptop that I want to setup with a static IP. For the most part it is used wireless, but on sometimes, when I am transfering large files to my NAS, I will wire it. Should I set both the wireless and wire connections with a static IP and should they be the same address?

Thank you,

Anthony

Why are you setting a static IP address? Does your router support Reserved IP addresses?

Hello Grumpy,

I am not familier with "Reserved IP addresses". My router let's me setup static internal IP addresses and I have a host name to use to get to my current external IP address.

I need a static Ip address for two reasons. One is I am running a home automation server that I want to see from other locations and I am running a file server that I want to access from other location.

In other words, you're going to setup port forwarding. I would use the same static IP address for both connections since only one will be active at a time. Make sure the static IP address is outside the DHCP range of the router.

And if you're going to use the same IP for both interfaces, be sure to disable your wireless connection when you hook it up wired.

I'd use different IPs for the different interfaces to avoid duplicate ARP entries, but you may have no problems with it.
