I have a laptop that I want to setup with a static IP. For the most part it is used wireless, but on sometimes, when I am transfering large files to my NAS, I will wire it. Should I set both the wireless and wire connections with a static IP and should they be the same address?
I am not familier with "Reserved IP addresses". My router let's me setup static internal IP addresses and I have a host name to use to get to my current external IP address.
I need a static Ip address for two reasons. One is I am running a home automation server that I want to see from other locations and I am running a file server that I want to access from other location.
In other words, you're going to setup port forwarding. I would use the same static IP address for both connections since only one will be active at a time. Make sure the static IP address is outside the DHCP range of the router.
