While we won't see anything amazingly new in CPU's until Nehalem and Deneb (not amazing, but at least new  ) until around the holiday season, the new graphics cards are almost out.

If you can wait till mid June, both ATI's and Nvidia's next refresh will be released. If they're sold out (as many new cards are at launch), then they could still drop prices on the 3870 and 8800gtx etc.

IMHO, the 9800gtx is not worth it, though arguments can be made for the 9800gx2 as single PCIe x16 SLI. For a current Nvidia card, the 8800gtx 512 is the best bet. Still, it should be left behind by GTX260, which will be a similar mid range card.

Personally, I think the upcoming 4870 with GDDR5 will be a better deal, though the 4850's with GDDR3 will arrive first. The newer Nvidia cards might have yield issues that limit availability and affect pricing.

For out-of-the-box performance, they will probably give you close to identical performance. The X38 will overclock more, but it would be worth it only if you really want to push it far since many P35 boards can already go up to ~400-450MHz FSB.

Like many people here, I own and love the Gigabyte P35-DS3L, but I think it is being replaced by the EP35-DS3L. I don't know if the later overclocks as well.
