If you have anything under 2GB, you won't able to run 32-bit Vista very smoothly.

Maybe the issue is that you just have a lot of programs running at startup so you have less memory for other things. Go to System Configuration > Startup and uncheck ALL the programs listed there except for antivirus and other programs at startup you may need running like file sharing or cloud syncing.
