I watched David Letterman in HD for his first HD show tonight. Add
another one for CBS.

I recorded it last night (too late for me ;-) anticipating whether the
speculation about Aug 29 being the HD launch date was correct. As you
say, it was. CBS never said anything at all about it on its web site.

Maybe they had a "chicken switch" mentality?

I would have loved to watch it. I'm not glued to CBS 24/7, but I saw no
mention of it anywhere, esp. here in NYC.

Can't compare. Having said that Dave handled it quite well. They
showed bacon frying in HD then three stage goons back stage having an
argument. Dave said, "See how wonderful that is in high definition?"

Also, in his monologue he announced that the show was now being
broadcast in high definition television. He added, "1 in 500,000 people
have a high definition tv set. So that means two people are watching us
tonight in hi def."

They then showed a phony CBS ad (or at least a phony audio-over)
announcing the Letterman Show is now in hi-def, with the final comment,
"What a waste of technology."

It will take more than HD to get folks to watch Letterman. Last night's
broadcast was a disgrace (content-wise) and they continue to struggle for
semi-decent material. A stunning picture and great sound just make the sad
situation a lot worse. His shtick is getting very tired.

I have been watching Letterman since he had a mid-day TV show (way back in
the late 70's), and I appreciate his talent. But these past few years have
not been his finest. At this point in the race, Leno is miles ahead in the
"entertainment" department.

Regarding Dave's comments, most people watching the show in SD probably
don't know what HD really is, or even care. Those folks watching in HD (like
us) just wound up shaking our heads...and changing the channel.

I watched about a half hour of tonight's show (Tuesday, 8/30/05). Picture
quality was quite good via DirecTV. Content was also good, featuring an
interview with Eileen Collins, the commander of the space shuttle. Dave's
questions and her responses were quite interesting. Sound was not Dolby
Digital 5.1. I checked NBC and found that sound was also not DD5.1. Jimmy
Kimmel, on ABC was in DD5.1 format. On a talk show, sound is not a big
factor unless they have a musical guest, but I have become a big fan of
excellent sound quality. It really enhances the overall viewing experience.
Cmdr Collins twice mentioned the prospect of a mission to Mars. I'm not a
young man, but I hope to be around to see the Mars landing in hidef. That
will be quite a sight!

Watched tonight OTA in Seattle and was receiving a Dolby Digital signal. So
I guess Direct TV is not passing along that signal or my local affiliate
(KIRO TV) is converting ProLogic to Dolby Digital.

I was watching Letterman on Time Warner Cable last night in HD, enjoying the
great picture, when suddenly the HD picture went back to SD. It was during
the joke about people not seeing the whole screen and famous celebrity in
SD, and the picture never came back to HD. I wonder what happened?

So, you like Leno? I tried that for a few months and really became disgusted.

Many of us "thinking folk" watch Nightline! I'll check the listings to see
if anyone I'm really interested is on Leno or Letterman and set the Tivo.

In that context I presume "thinking folk" are those who want to obain timely
in-depth analysis of current events. I gave up on television for that a long
time ago.

I spent a lot of bucks for HDTV to see good visuals and either be mildly
informed (travel shows, and the like) or entertained.

Nah...I'm saying that I wouldn't get in the ritual of watching Leno,
Letterman, Conan etc on a nightly basis, choosing instead to watch them when
there is a guest of interest. As for television news magazine programs,
Nightline does some of the better reporting out there. By generally devoting
the full program to one issue or event they are one of the more in-depth
sources of news available on television. Ted Koppel is certainly a cut above
anything you are gonna see on FOX at 11:30pm! While television may not be my
primary source for news I certainly find benefit from having moving pictures
associated with news stories I may have read about elsewhere. As a sound
mixer for video and film by trade I can "genereralize" from personal
experience that the crewing desk at ABC hires the "A" camera types of crews
and producers for those shoots as opposed to the less experienced crews that
are working for the tabloid news operations like FOX.

It's amazing that Letterman would denigrate HD and suggest that almost
nobody watches HD since he and his writers, being highly-paid TV network
people as they are, no doubt ALL have HDTV's in THEIR homes. Even if they
thought this joke would please the SD-watchers, odd that they would go out
of their way like this to irritate an important demo for advertisers.
Probably something else to it that we don't know about.

Dave got HDTV about a year ago and said it was "amazing" and that he
could'nt wait for CBS to start airing The Late Show in hi-def since they
were already using the hd cameras,he went on how good programming looked and
it is so much better so now its a source for more jokes.
As far as thinking, most of his jokes do fly bys to alot of people
because they do require thought. Its called wit.

I didn't see the Letterman show in question myself. I was respoding to what
someone else said about it. But if what you are suggesting was the case,
then what Dave was doing is not called "wit"; it's called "irony".
