can i simultaneously use my iomega external hard drive on both a pc and mac and continue to go back and forth between a pc and mac? is that possible, or will i have to use it for one or the other only?

Use it on each one. Select a file system compatible between both like ext2.
Ext2 can read by both Windows and Mac.
Macs can read NTFS with special software.
