Hi,
Considering a first HDTV set.
There are so many strange brand names such as Syntax Olevia, Maxent,
Hisense, Kreisen, Soyo, etc., etc. Who is servicing these brands?
We decided on a 37 in. LCD set. Could experts here give me a pointer
for best bang for the buck? We have HDTV signal carrying cable hook up
and currently no off the air HD signal locally. We watch DVDs often.
I have 5 channel surround sound audio system.
TIA,
Tony

I could, but you've already decided on the wrong technology. If you have
the room for a CRT based RPTV, you get the biggest and best bang for the
buck with one of them.

Which one do you want?

For cost effectiveness, nothing beats CRT based RPTVs. DLPs, LCDs,
LCOS, etc., all have expensive lamps that need to be replaced, usually
at twice the rate the manufacturer claims. Toshiba and Hitachi make
great CRT based RPTVs and they are now cheap as dirt. Their contrast
ratio is fantastic, giving an almost 3D look to the picture.

If you are speaking of LCD Panels, I have had 3 and seen many, the best bang
for the buck hands down in Syntax Olevia, I have a 32", if you are speaking
of a type of technology, its like the others said, CRT based RPTV's, I tend
to favor Samsung (dlp) and Panasonic (lcd) if you are talking best product
for price.

Hi,
That is something I over looked. Which particular model RPTV should I
look for then?
Space is no problem here placing the set.
TIA,
Tony

Check out the Sony 46" KP-46WT520 ($900 with a Sears price match). May be a
little big for what you want, but you can't go wrong for the price and
picture quality. If you want something smaller, check out the Sanyo HT30744
($647) - it's 30" but, you can't go wrong with the value/PQ. Just my $.02

Hi,
My basement has plenty of room. Anything 30 to 50 in. would fit. Budget
is ~2.5K.
Thanks,
Tony

That max price will get you a very good 65" CRT RPTV.
If you are willing to go up to 57" (I have a 56" and am going to go
larger when it gets replaced) take a look at Toshiba 57HX94:

When you can get a >50" CRT RPTV with more resolution (about 1400x1080 vs.
1280x720) *and* with built-in tuner for about the same price, I can't
see how the plasma is "by far the best bang for the buck".
Sure, it's sexy and you can hang it on the wall, but it's not a great
deal.
