I am kind of in a tight spot. I have started to experiment with video editing (also do moderate gaming right now playing The Witcher) and my x2 3800+ just isn't cutting it for vid editing and I wanted to upgrade my cpu. I'm on a tight budget around $150 usd .
I have Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H 780g chip skt am2+ which on their website supports up to Phenom X4 9750 (no 9850)
cpu cooler I have ocz vendetta
So my dilemma is I found a deal on the Phenom 9600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819103244 at the egg for $135 shipped I was wondering if this is a good deal and a good upgrade or if I should scrap upgrading and just save more money and wait. I do realize that this one has the tlb but at 135 it seems to be a good deal. The next quad would be the 9550 which is $40 more and out of my budget. I also thought about the tri-core but they don't seem to be a good deal to me (or are they). Any recommendations? Thank you for your time
To tell you the truth a better X2 (6000+) or even a higher clocked tri core would be a better bet. You could get a 6000+ BE and use that. It will benefit you more due to the higher clock speeds.
with video editing in mind those apps do benefit ALOT more from a quad core than a dual core... if 9600 is what you can afford i would go for that.

I agree, probably your best choice. Just don't expect to overclock it much.
You could also get a 5000+BE and overclock it to 3.2Ghz pretty easily. It's cheaper and should give a performance boost for all apps, not just those that will fully utilize a quad core.
Get the 9850 and enter settings Yourself, it is the same chip as 9750 only higher clocked, if Your board does not support it, it will with bios updates. In the meantime You can set it up manually. Or even better overclock it.
So phenoms 95w versions might come out this year. I didn't know. That is very tempting. Some of you say the 5000+ be would be quite an upgrade (especially for gaming) but how much better for encoding? Any ideas

Premiere Pro 2.0
MPEG2 (24 Sec. HDTV 1920 x 1080) to (WMV9 (1920 x 1080))
Don't get the 9850.It won't work on your Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H 780g chip skt am2+ board as you have already stated.Even though the Phenom X4 9550 Quad Core is $40 more than your budget it's a great match for your board.
I wouldn't get any defective B2 Phenom X4 CPU like the 9600.
Really go for the 9550.You will be happy with this one.
By the time you'll see great benefits from the 4th core, it will be time to upgrade, and then you should be able to go Deneb with a bios update.
I have a similar situation. I bought a Gigabyte 780G board and was going to put a 95 watt B3 Phenom in last spring but I couldn't afford DDR2 1066 until after the vacation, so I decided to hold off till spring and get an 8750 and DDR2 1066 all at once.
Here's an old review of the 8750 that includes the 9600 for comparison:
The 9600be isn't bad, but kinda like playing roulette when it comes to overclocking. I wouldn't worry too much about the TLB errata, other than making sure the fix is disabled in bios. Anything phenom based will also improve the performance of the IGP since it will be running of HT3.0 instead of 2.0.
With a good video card, and decent 1066 ram, any of the phenom based chips will also be able to game well too.
