Before I tried the Catalyst 8.6 beta on 3870 and it was not good, I hope Formal release of Catalyst 8.6 won't with the poor image quality issue that was on beta version.

That's insanely awesome! $190!

It's even less than the most claimed start price. And this is before any price war with nvidia.

I just really hope it performs as well as has been claimed.

Reply to yadge

Ive been reading test after test, the french site findings etc. This is a better card than the 9800GTX

There's already a preview. It basically equal in terms of 9800gtx performance. Sometimes 260gtx performance. Even better than 8800ultra in AA performance so...

Yeah i noticed that but i knew they would have to release something against the 4850. If they could figure out a way to get the 260 around 200-250 that would be a killer card!

Wow, that's pretty nice. So pretty much the 4850 and 9800gtx will both be $200.

That's pretty good.

the 9800gtx+ looks intriguing though...

any word on how well these new cards run f@h? i just installed the gpu2 client on my 8800gt and it pulls like 4500ppd running the 177.35 drivers with modded inf. if i can sell the 8800 and get something like this for minimal out of pocket cost and get better game performance and folding then damn. 190 bucks is a steal as far as im concerned.

Reply to asymetriccircle

Ive tried finding links for comparisons, anyone? F@H is so new for nVidia its tough to find a link

Just a question... what is this folding@home? I understand it's some medical program but why is everyone trying/wanting to run it on their PC's? Even people who have no use / connection to the program whatsoever? What's the deal? Thanks

Folding at Home basically uses your CPU (and/or for a while now the GPU) when you aren't using it. It does calculations "folding" proteins. I do not now the specifics, but I think it helps with the field of Alzheimer or Parkinsons or something like that, as well as other diseases.

People just do it because it benefits mankind. It only uses your unused processing power, so you don't lose anything. It's just a nice way to help out.

yea right. by using the extra processing power your computer consumes more power that normal. Imagine millions of people doing it at the same time. Ok, they'll find a cure for cancer, but we'll all be dead by global warming!!
Anyways, f@h is a good initiative and well intended. Unfortunatelly, my athlon 3800 single core has absolutely no processing power to spare!!

Putting 1gb in it would be a waste of money, as the 9800gx2 vs gtx280 battle has shown memory amount and bandwidth are not so important anymore unless to plan to game at super high resolutions.

Sure 512mb and 256bit buss may be the bottleneck it less shader heavy games, but in those games you would still be getting over 60fps.

If the gtx280 had only 512 mb and 256 bit bus, its performance in crysis at resolutions up to 1600*1200 (possibly higher)
would be near identical.

Yeah, but I'm thinking about getting a 24" monitor soon.

And at 1920x1200 with AA, I think a little more memory might help. I don't really know. But that's why I'd be interested in seeing some benchmarks.

This is what I call efficient. 3dmark Vantage texture fillrate test shows that 4850 has faster throughput even with less theoretical fillrate compared to 8800gt.

This is the new pixel fillrate on vantage. Efficient with same 16ROPS. This helps AA and higher resolutions.

Actually it's much better. It's new 55nm shrink of old g92. So it's faster, cheaper and cooler...
It provides some real competition to new ATi 4000 series cards in middle range GPU sector!
200 series is for those who has a lot of money! 9800GTX+ and 4850 and 4870 are for normal mortals like you and me...

Reply to hannibal

Maybe, still waiting for those 4870s tho, and their pricing. This all looks soooo good. Fiiiinally upgrade time

Reply to jaydeejohn

Yep, the 4850 is so much better than 3870! And now when Nvidia is moving to 55nm, the prises will fall down from both camps!

Reply to hannibal

Exactly. I like a dual slot config, so Im holding out for one. To me another 3-6 weeks is a great time to buy

Texture fillrate in Vantage synthetic test showing FP16 blending fillrate. Even edging out the 280gtx. This is when you use things like HDR. This would be more important than say 8 bit integer texture format since we are trying to move forward not backwards with old games.

What can you say about this? That 4850 is good match to 260gtx. Give or take.
