Encountered this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyK3WlWTi10

Laughed at the cheesy music, and was awed by the extreme 5.0Ghz setup. But that video was made back in 2003(!)

Here's my question: since components are way more powerful nowadays, what's the fastest CPU clock speed possible as of 2009?

Mmmm, actually, today's best OC might not be over that, maybe even lower. But you have to realize that back in 2003, there was only a single core. With more cores you run the risk of having one unable to reach such high speed.

However I'm sure everyone would agree you are far better with a 4GHz dual/quad core than a 5GHz single core :) .

P4 at 9ghz.

or for modern components I think a p2 720 could reach 7ghz with some liquid helium.

I definitely agree! You should check out the vid of ahnilated. It's a quad-core running at 6.5Ghz+ and really awesome!

Where'd you read about or see it? Found an article of a team reaching 8Ghz with the P4: http://www.nordichardware.com/news,5505.html

I read about 7GHz with an E8600 on LN, probably about 4 months ago.

What was it about the P4 that made them an overclocker's wet dream anyway?
