Hey i was looking at my specs of my mobo today and noticed it can take DDR2 1200. I have DDR2 800 in my cart but should i buy 1200 instead.

Mobo: ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

Nope, DDR2-800 is fast enough for FSB datarates up to 1600MHz, and the "faster" RAM is just normal RAM with a jacked-up voltage and jacked-up price. Make sure any RAM you buy is spec'd no higher than 1.9V.

thanks but i can't go above 1.9v so i have to use the other sticks instead of the other ones

Here they are

2.

i can't use the second right because they use 2.0-2.1V

That's what I said -- do NOT get RAM that needs a voltage higher than 1.9V.

I have it, its a nice board. Running 1600mhz FSB, 1:1 with RAM. It posted the first time, so I was very pleased with that. I managed to grab a coupon code for it, making the price $130, same as the P5Q.

My current mobo is a 650 i ultra and i have no complaints on it. I am gonna be starting another build and was interested in asus mobo's and i like what i heard on the reviews on that model and i am interested in buying one. Thanks for the response on the mobo doomturkey and good luck with your build hopkiller.

Hopkiller: AFAIK, no one makes DDR2/1200 bigger than 1 GB. I like that same G.Skill that you found; 2x2 GB for $75 with coupon and it's on Asustek's QVL for 4x2 sticks in a P5Q.

Mondoman: I'm looking at a P5Q Pro too. What memory did you put in yours? Did you OC?

Any views on P5Q-E or P5Q Deluxe? I can't figure out what's the difference besides fancier (looking) cooling.

in response to some earlier replies...why should the memory voltage spec be no more than 1.9v? if I have RAM that is spec-ed to 2.1v, can i choose to change that setting? is it backwards compatible automatically?

I am looking at this m/b and this RAM:

mobo (DDR2 1200 capable):

RAM (DDR2 800 2.1v spec):

Nice post Mondoman, I hadn't seen that.

hopkiller, you can use RAM that requires higher voltage... it's just better to get the lower voltage stuff.

Better yet, get low voltage AND low timings:

ah. Thanks alot for the reply, that did help explain it. i figured the answer would be similar to that, but wasn't confident.

thanks for the link. I had planned on shopping around for comprable ram, but hadn't gotten there yet. thanks.
