Are email password retrievable

Are email passwords retrievable when someone uses a laptop once to access his email? I mean if someone got his hands on cookie files or the SAM files. Is there any chance they might take hold of an email ,facebook,gmail or whatever password?

It is probably at least possible in the proper circumstances, but odds are it'd be faster and easier to just use social engineering methods to get this info.
