TestDisk is a good tool for recovering partitions as it was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). I have had good success with SpinRight from GRC as far as restoring corrupt hard drives. If you just need to recover the data then I would suggest Get Data Back. There are many recovery tools out there. You just need to know what you want to do with the recovery data and where you are going to put it.

Get Data Back is the most reliable tool that I have ever used. Saved my ass every time. Really recommend it.
