Back in April, the local cable guide had a short piece on the back
page, reporting news from the CES. Toshiba & Cannon were showing
a new flat panel technology refered to as SED (surface conduction
electron-emitter display). The report went on to say it's responce
time was the chief improvement, eliminating motion blurs common to
current flat panel techs. Definately want to see one of these before
wasting any money on a large flat panel set.

No. There was a recent press release about early test pre-production
runs of SED TVs, but SED TVs won't hit the market until 2006 and even
then in very small quantities. Volume production is not planned until
2007. Motion smear is not an issue with plasmas, so SED offers no
benefit there. The selling point of SED is claimed CRT equivalent black
levels and very high contrast. Remains to be seen if they have deep
enough pockets to compete with plasma and LCD flat panel TVs by 2007, as
plasma and LCD prices will have fallen even further by then and will
have improved their technology.
