Can anyone tell me how much power I would need (amount of watts) fro an E8400 with 2 gig ram on a sysytem not intended for gaming/ overclocking or any video editing/ coding???

Why do You want E8400 on a system not intended for gaming/ overclocking or any video editing/ coding?
Anyway we are going to need more specs of Your sytem to help not just a cpu.

I would grab this.
For $30, It's tough to get such a good quality PSU.

Even that, however, would be overkill for wattage.
A decent 300w PSU would be more than enough.

If you really are only going to be using low end GPUs, even this would work.

However, that is a lower end Antec model and I would go for the 1st one.

thanks zenmaster, (your first link didnt show up though)
ainairssems - cpu is for ultra quick vista use/ general tasking and "yes I can notice the diff from say 2.4 ghz" - am looking at an Intel G31 ICH7-DH mobo b/c it's cheap and will do the job + has an 1333 FSB, I'll use a WD CAVIAR 640gb for the HDD, Ram will be lo-end Corsair DDR2 667, I will do some DVD burning and yeah is that enough info for you?

oh sorry, forgot to mention - no graph card at this stage unfortunately as I've been led to beleive it wont imiprove performance for int browsing/ downloading DVD's, and since I'm not gaming what's the point?

Reply to simon1980111

yeah supremelaw I had a 430w earthwats tagged as the psu, but am hoping to shave off some cost by downgrading b/c probably no point having some much power when not overclocking/ gaming

A discrete graphics card like a 2400Pro can offload some of the video processing and can improve the quality on DVD video.

Don't some of the integrated ones drop frames?

dont really know, i might need one of those 2400 things

Reply to simon1980111

thanks Paul, I might get a lo-end 250 watt corsair and hope for the best, cheers

The Ancte 430w was the one I had linked.

If you want to go lower, get the Basiq, which is only $19.99 plus shipping.

If you try and shave any more price off, you will not be getting a quality PSU.

However, The 430w Antec will likely pay the difference in price due to the higher efficiency. You can try and find Antec Case/CPU combo deals. You may find really good deals to save you money. Most of the Combo deals have the EarthWatts which are 80+ Certified and good quality.

Here an an Example -

I bought this case on sale for a steal of a deal a few months ago.
It's a nice case and CPU for builds that will not be using lots of power.

i would do a minimum dual 1000w psu's.

minimum 2000 watts wtf! that would power my whole house (I'm not OCing so I think that would be a waste of money), thanks anyway

Reply to simon1980111

relax, it was a joke.

Reply to ifor

actually, id go for a decent psu over 400 watts to be safe.
I could use something liek that in my rig, since it needs about 300 watts. But just to be safe, go for something larger within your budget.
