I'm thinking about building a new system and considering the intel price drop this Q3, which will lower the price of Q9550 to ~300USD, should I be choosing Q9550 over Q6600? Is it worth the $100 to get the 45nm What's the advantage of having that 45nm technology?

I dont' know all too much about it, but with the 45nm process you get twice the power in the same space. They are built with differant material giving you better cooling, and more efficient power usage. I have been told by a lot of my friends (who know more than me) to go with the E8400 over the Q6600 for the simple reason it is uses the 45nm technology. Even though you lose the 2 cores, you get all those extra benefits, as for your question whether it's worth $100, you need to ask yourself what your system is going to be used for.

In my opinion you will not regret the $100, I would jump for the better processor. However you won't be disappointed with q6600

It depends on if you want the best performance or best value. 45nm is a die shrink, there is no difference in architecture.

However, it does introduce a new instruction set and higher 2x6mb cache, compared to q6600's 2x4mb, which adds up to an average +10% performance per ghz.

The only drawback is it use slightly lower multiplier and has lower vcore tolerance, which holds back overclocking. If you're not into ocing, it doesn't matter.

It runs at higher stock clock, which means high performance if not oced.

At $300, it's 50+% higher than the $190 q6600, much higher percentage than the speed increase. Which means it's not the best bang for the buck.

Just wondering, where can you get q9550 for $300? Newegg has it for $550. I'd be a big price drop.

oh, no the price didn't drop yet. It is a speculation though that this 3rd quarter, the intel cpu prices are going to drop. many forums support this speculations (you can google them, try along the line of "2008 3Q intel cpu price drop/reduction") and one of them is Q9550 dropping to ~$300 and Q9450 phasing out/replaced by Q9400 and some more. Hopefully it happens sometime soon because I would probably get the Q9550.

Wouldn't the 9450 and 6600 drop alongside? :p

one of the source I got the info from: http://www.digitimes.com/mobos/a20080520PD205.html

The price of Q6600 already dropped once last April didn't it? with the price of 209 i don't know if it will drop anymore. The gap between Q6600 and Q9550 will be filled by Q9400 (which will replace Q9450) with the price of ~$266. So it would make sense for Q6600 keep its price as low 200? I don't know, the forums I visited did not indicate the price decrease on Q6600 unfortunately. (but rather indicated how it will be phased out of production)

again see the source above, the 9650 will be around $530 after the drop in price. I'm gonna guess that another price drop will be sometime next year nearing (or after) nehalem/penryn core release. Instead, 9550 will take over the 9450 price right now.

more I think about it, i'm leaning more towards 9550.

Speed difference is negligable. Overclocking on the q9xxx is limited since it has FSB 333 to start with. While you can overclock relatively easy over fsb 400, you will need to invest more on higher speed ram. That shouldn’t be too much, but expenses add up. Performance, on the other hand, does not.

Only one exception to all that. sse4 instructions. Its supposed to make video encoding in mp4 formats 40% faster – clock per clock compared to c2q 6600.

Is it worth it?

The multiplier for the Q9550 is at least better than the Q9450 by .5. The Q9650 has a 9 multiplier, by the time it drops price nehalem will be released probably. The Q9450 runs cooler and can be overclock but will be more mobo depended due to running high fsb. I guess it worth in my opinion, speeds up encoding due to higher cache and sse 4.1 instructions.

crazy...Q9650 with multiplier of 9. wow. 3.6ghz OC-ing on a quad will be relatively easy now eh? i guess we'll be seeing 4.0ghz OC quads in the near future now. amazing.

wonder if dual cores are going to go beyond that and higher.

The new price of Q9550 will be US$316 on Aug.10, i read in:
http://nueda.main.jp/blog/archives/003649.html
(Sorry, written in Japanese...)

Is it right ?

Also, could somebody help me to learn the benchmark of Q9550 in comaprison with other CPU's ?

A site i know does not contain the data of Q9550. But it's helpful, so i cite below:

go with a q9650 if u can get one for a good price if not q9550 does 4.2 is pretty much the upper limt on thoes chips i got 4.1 easily but yeat its a good upgrade from the q6600 bench marks dont lie
