I would add the local news to that list, including remote feeds from the
field. The exception might be the newsie 'copters because of
transmission limitation.

I can't imagine anything more exciting than the weekly LA freeway chase
in vivid HiDef. (just kidding ;-)

Los Angeles' ABC affiliate already has an HD camera in their news
helecopter.

99% of their news is upconverted SD, but when they switch to the
helecopter feed, it's full HD.

KABC has a chopper with HD. I happened to be flipping channels when they
were covering a chase, and the picture looked pretty good. Right up until
the driver jumped out, pulled a gun, and ran towards a restaurant full of
bystanders. KABC zoomed out quickly, but not until after I saw a man shot
and killed on live TV.

The shooting was justified, but I didn't need to see it, much less in HD.

I am in the Los Angeles market (just barely) so my cable company carries KABC
in high-def. I never watch it though. ;-)

Sounds like a good way to give wanna be criminals a second thought.

You didn't "need" to see the killing? Maybe then you didn't "need" to be
watching a live police chase. IMO, anyone watching live police action has
signed a virtual disclaimer stating that they will not bitch about any
violence they happen to see.

That having been said, I do think that there are some things shown on TV
that NObody "needs" to see. They are personally and socially destructive
and, if I were dictator, I would not allow them. But cops shooting perps,
IMO, is GOOD for us to see. Including kids. Especially kids.

Why?
You want your news censored?

First of all, what does HD have to do with. Is the effect of the
shooting really any different in SD vs HD? Of course not.

Secondly, it's real life. Violence is everywhere. Do you want to ignore
it and pretend it doesn't exists? And if you're afraid of seeing
violence, why didn't you immediately turn off the show when you saw it
was a police chase? Don't you know that those chases don't always end
with bliss and flowers being thrown by beautiful girls?

WUSA in D.C. has their news in HD and make sure everyone knows that
they are the first in the area to have it. Even their field reports
are in HD. Only the stories sourced outside the station are in SD.

I made the decision to watch, and accept the responsibility. There's a
powerful attraction to watching conflict from a safe distance. Violence
should get our attention, that's a basic survival instinct. I need to
respond *right now* to violence within reach, which may threaten my
safety. When time is short, almost any action is better than no action.

But those instinctive responses are wrong for distant events. Rational
thought should replace emotion. My heart should race if someone near me
pulls a gun; it's an appropriate preparation for fight or flight. When
someone 60 miles away pulls a gun, I should be thinking about where a
multiple felon got a gun, are we providing enough tax dollars for police,
and do the laws need to be changed.

TV brings distant events into our homes. That's often a truly wonderful
thing. But sometimes it can manipulate our emotions in a perverted way,
making us respond as if the danger were actually in our homes. The racing
heart, the excitement, the fascination are seductive. But no man's death,
no matter how deserved, should be turned into a voyeuristic thrill. I
regret that I gave in to the excitement of the chase. The fatal ending
reminded me that this wasn't staged for my entertainment, that people
really were in danger.

I'm not calling for censorship. I'm trying to express my disgust for
treating a serious event as entertainment. TV can turn any of us into
voyeurs, and I regret falling into that trap.

In response to hac:
On the few occasions,I have watched police chases from a live view
feed,I do not get any voyeuristic thrill from it.Although I have yet to
view a fatal outcome myself from such coverage,if indeed one were to
occur and I happened to view it,I would get extreme satisfaction that
this is one idiot I as a taxpayer, will not have to provide a trial and
incarceration. If deadly force is needed, generally these perpetrators get
what they deserve.I,for one would not be crying because of their demise
trying to escape or commit criminal activity.A death in these
circumstances means this guy can no longer be a criminal statistic in
the future.Once gone,good riddance.

"Air7 HD" transmits the LA freeway mess, during their news broadcasts,
in glorious 1081i HD on the Cox Cable network on Channel 707
(simulcast HD version of the Channel 7 regular analog].
