Hello all,

I am under the impression that my Antec NeoHE 550w PSU will be enough to run this system, but alas I still would like some input just to make sure. The reason for asking is because I will be changing my video card from my 8800 GTS 512mb to a 4870 512mb, adding another hard drive and most likely be taking my CPU slightly higher because I am getting a new CPU cooler and case.

System:
E6420 @ 3.2 - 3.4ghz voltage will be around 1.4v for stability (I have tested at this, but just do not currently run it at that speed due to memory limitations that are being remedied)
4gb (2x2gb) DDR2 8000mhz memory @ 2.1v
Abit AB9 Pro Motherboard
2x120gb hard drive (currently have)
1x320gb hard drive (that I plan to add)
1 optical drive sata lite-on 20x dvd burner
Audigy 2 ZS Sound card
HD 4870 (upgrading from 8800GTS 512mb)
Floppy drive (yes I still use it lol)
Antec 300 case (most likely will b adding 2x120 fans in the front of it)
Zalman 9500 CPU Cooler

That is the whole system. The part that kinda is giving me trouble is the fact that I am adding that 4th hard drive. If need be I could just drop out one of my older 120gb and continue running 3 drives instead of 4, but that is basically the reason for my post. Should I drop one of the hard drives or not? Should I drop to 4850 (I dont believe this to b the case, but just thought i would throw it in there) Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks in advance.

Edit: I thought I should note that the power supply is around 2.5 years old at this point, but is still in good condition as far as I know.

Best,

3Ball

You need at least 32A on the 12V rails for a HD 4870 and a minimal system. Yours isn't exactly minimal, with the overclocking and all those disks, but it's not that bad either. The NeoHE 550 offers 3x18A, combined 42A. I think you'll be fine.

If you want, you could buy a HD 4850 and a 750TX for the same money as a HD 4870. Performance would be lower, true, but not by that much.

According to Newegg specs, if you push that NeoHe to the edge it works at 76% efficiency (rather than normal 82%). That's not great, but still acceptable IMO.

Yea it is definitely a borderline decision to make.

Well I decided to stop being an id10t and I went ahead and ordered a 650TX with 52a on a single rail. Thought it would be best not to chance it. Newegg has a 10% off promotion on power supplys today that I got in an e-mail so I just used that and got it for a good price. Thx for all the help guys...should have just made this decision earlier lol!
