I've purchased two of these things, one 27" and one 30", and love both of
them. I think I'm going to buy the 37" for the family room and was just
wondering who's behind these things. Is its Samsung like I've heard?
Philips?
From what I have read the 37" is getting great reviews. I have an HDTiVo on
its way to connect to this bad boy and I'm really looking forward to getting
this together.

The Westinghouse LCDs are probably made by one of the Taiwan
manufacturers such as Chi Mei (CMO), AU Optronics (AUO) and others who
are the OEMs for a lot of the low end off-brand LCD TVs. But I don't
recall reading a confirmation of that.
Frankly, I have not been impressed with the Taiwan source LCDs for use
as the primary TV because they have lousy minimum black levels compared
to the latest Sharps and Samsungs. When comparing TVs, look at how much
detail you see in dark scenes. The sets with poor black levels will be a
whitish black/grey wiping out the parts of the picture with darker
areas. The cheap LCDs are ok for small TVs for the kitchen and also
suitable if you want a really big desktop monitor which a lot of people
have been buying the 30" and 37" Westinghouses for.

The Westinghouse trademark has been sold off. The right to use that
trademark for motors and displays is owned by a S. Korean corporation. They
opened a shop in Auston intending to build monitors for Dell but Dell
offered less than it cost to build them in Auston so they packed up and
moved back to S. Korea. The motor company is still in Auston.

I agree 100%. There is absolutely no comparison between the lower end
panels such as Westinghouse/Olevia/Norwood/etc and the Sharps. The
latest Samsung units do appear to have gotten much better. A year ago,
I'd have lumped them in with the other bottom feeders and now they look
very nice for the $$$.
I'm not sure I'd use the Westinghouse for a monitor, even though they're
dirt cheap since the resolution isn't that great. For about $1600 you
can "move up" to a Samsung 16:9 24" display that will do 1920x1200.
Both Dell and HP have similar products in that price range that have
been well received. A lower res, grainy picture gets old REALLY quickly
with a PC display.
