new build

Could someone please advise me on my first PC build. I wish to use the computer for gaming (Crysis, Company of Heros, War Rock) and to play video on my HDTV, perhaps as a PVR in the future, and to watch instant downloaded movies and Netflix.

I already have a wireless keyboard, wireless mouse, a gaming mouse, a 22 inch Monitor, 2 gigs of Corsair DDR2 800 speed memory. This is my list of components I plan to order from Newegg:

More about build
  1. Welcome to the forums lbrende.

You have a good system layed out their, however I wouldn't go with the stock PSU that comes with your case, I would change to something made by Corsair, OCZ, mushkin, or Thermaltake in the 550-600W range.
I think that vista benefits from 4GB of RAM, especially for gaming, and I would suggest adding another 2GB of that Corsair ram and changing to a 64-bit version of Home Premium.

    So in conclusion:

    PSU OPTIONS:
    mushkin 580W Modular PSU
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817812004

    Corsair 550W non-modular PSU
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004

    Thermaltake W0101RU 550W non-modular PSU
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153029

    OS if changing RAM:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116204

I would need to know your RAM type before commenting further on it
  2. Not a bad setup, but a few pointers.
1- that northbridge will melt your case, please put a fan on it, or go with a different board.
    Aus P5N-D
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131232
    $149.99
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188026&Tpk=evga%2b750i
    $189.99
(thats if SLI is your thing)
2- Same for overclocking, that motherboard will struggle if you want to crank it up.
3- Power supply with the case is just fine, more then enough power for what your running, and the Antec neo power actually isn't as bad as some other Antec PSUs
4- If you are overclocking, and you don't need a 'silent' machine, the xigmatek hdt-s1283 is a better cooler.

  3. You get MSI 8800GTS for $180 on newegg
  4. What he said^
Faster card, better cooler, same price...no brainer.
  5. The ACF7P comesith thermal compound on the HSF base. If you are going to install the HSF once, you don't need the AS5.

OTOH, heatsink compound is one of those handy things to have.
  6. personally i would stick with 32bit windows as 64bit is still a little bit ****y

(people complain about vista being incompatible , well 64bit is much much worse )

and you only gain by having 64bit windows if you have more than 6-8 gb of ram as the memory overhead of 64bit vista is about that same as the ram you gain from 32bit with 4gb of ram

but i still think 4gb of ram is a good idea ( well 3.3gb )

maybe change the mobo to a p35 chipest unless you want sli later on
  7. I do not have any personal experience with the motherboard, but know someone who has returned 2 of them. If you want SLI, I'd look for something different.
  8. Thanks for the feedback. The GTS is not listed for the same price. It is $209 on New egg. Toms Best bang for the buck april 2008 was used to help me pick many of the components.
My biggest problem is to get the right board. If you read the reviews on the boards on New Egg you can always find a horror story. I generally favored the boards with lost of reviews and "runs right out of the box" comments. The lack of a heatsink on the board I chose does bother me. I doubt if I will ever put 2 video cards on this board and I think it would be advantageous to have more pci slots as I may use this as a media PC more so in the future than now. With tha t in mind, I would favor a board with a PCIe2.o slot so I can get the most out of the video card, but these are difficult to find except on SLI boards.
Quietness of the machine is a concern and a big reason why I chose the Antec case with it's 85 rated power supply and and the 45nm processor. A more efficient power supply and cpu will mean less need for noisy fans.
I just wish that the video card manufacturers could come out with more efficient circuits. High heat is usually a product of less efficient use of electrical current, hence more waste energy as heat. I may upgrade the cooling on the video card also.
  9. damn...that same card had a $30 rebate until yesterday... you missed it by a whisker

anyways you ought to get a Radeon 4850 instead....or at least wait till the benchmarks release...which is anytime this week.
  10. Here is my updated list, I went with the Gigabyte board since I don't planto SLI, and found a better deal on the video card. I am holding off on the tv card til I know more:

  11. That's a nice solid updated build you have mate. Can I ask what RAM you're going to be using with it?
  12. Nice build...though you should get Seagate 500gb 7200.11 since its faster than the WD550AAKS.

  17. Looks good, get back if you need anything. If you're going to overclock, consider this cooler, it costs alittle more, but it's worth it.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003

pOisonapple; didn't mean anything with my comment just thought maybe you missed the ram part. I miss stuff in posts all the time.Sorry.
  18. I checked it out. It is huge!. Saw it at Fryes the other day. There were some comments on the Artic 7 & that it is quiet. That is one reason I chose it, also suppose to be easy to install. I don't plan to overclock. Unless I can do it without increasing voltages or making the system unstable. I will probably add another gig of memory to max out vista 32 in the future. Reviews I have read say I may need to add a heatsink to the TV tuner card.
  19. My build went fine except for a few problems. I do not get any sound out of the port on the back of the motherboard. My case came with a front headphone jack that is working with my speakers.
    I have a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R 775 P35 RT with onboard audio.

I am exchanging my TV tuner card for a PCI as the PCIe slot is too close to my VGA.
  20. I installed several drivers after using "Driver Detective" and the sound comes out the back ONLY now. Front headphone jack does not work.
Driver detective still shows I need to update the following:
    Intel 82801 Bridge - 244E
    High Definition Audio Device
    Any help welcome
Also sometimes when I reboot the computer the Gigabyte "Dynamic Energy Saver" interface only comes up against a black screen and my desktop never shows up. I have to restart to get my desktop back up.
Should I uninstall the Dynamic Energy saver and Easytune6?
    Thanks
    Dave
  21. I didn't see the memory you had chosen. But if your looking for some decent priced memory for a light overclock...like if your going to push that 8400 to a mild 3.6GHz (8x400) then you might want to take a look at the mushkin. Also a better vid card I would think would be the MSI someone here already mentioned. Not only is it factory overclocked, but it has superior cooling compared to the other 8800GT's out there. All in all though, that's a nice build you have going. :)
