VGA connection not working

When I connect my Tosh satellite via the VGA cable initially thw indows logo appears the it goes blank and the TV shows "no signal"

I forget the keyboard combination off the top of my head, but there is one for changing display modes such as internal display, mirror internal and external, and use both as independent monitors. Have you tried hitting that yet?
