No. If you're going to install an OS, let it do the formatting as part of the install.

That time seems unreasonably long. We built a system recently (relatively fast new components, but not a blazing game machine!) and a Full Format on a 1.5 TB WD Green drive took about 5 hours.

So, why is yours going so slowly? Well, start with the system - how new / fast is the mobo and CPU system? How big is this new SATA HDD?

Is your system doing any other work in the background as the format operation proceeds? Maybe that it tying up your CPU with other work.

How are you formatting to begin with? I assumed form your post you have an OS running (maybe Windows, but which one?) and are using some part of it to Format the drive. But maybe not. Are you actually in the middle of Installing the OS? Or, are you using some bootable disk to run a Partition and format utility?

How is the BIOS set to handle the SATA drive? This is related to your OS and the way you will use the disk. Any OS, including Windows versions, needs a driver to access any hard drive. IF this will be the boot drive, then the OS needs that driver built into itself. However, If the drive will be used for data only AFTER the OS is running from another boot disk, then the OS can load the required drivers from that boot disk as part of its loading process. Either way, a problem with the driver can cause lots of errors and slow the system down or cause it to fail entirely.

Details of which drivers are needed and when / where are affected by BIOS settings because current BIOS makers offer options to make a true SATA device appear to be something else to make driver issues in the OS easier to manage. That is why the exact version of your OS, the planned use of the drive, and the BIOS settings all have to mesh together. So tell us your details and plans.
