That's exactly what I've been wanting to see. A 4850 with 1gb and better cooling, for more ocing headroom.

It just depends on how much higher they'll price these things.

And how much 1gb of ram will actually help at 1920x1200.

Cool. Hope it really boosts the overclockability of the card too.

Dual slot cooler and 1gb ram... Isn't that a 4870? :sarcastic:

No, ATI doesnt purposely cripple their cards. The clocks will be 20% slower than the 4870. Also, no GDDR5

Ouch... :p

So are they using lower chips or just crippling perfectly good chips?

the 4870 also uses higher voltage I believe, as its the same card with more effient memory, but requires more amps

I havnt seen that, link?

Well actually the 1GB version is ok. It's good if you go for two 4850 cf system. The 4850 has juice for higher resolutions in cf, so more memory is not completely wasted. But 4870 is definitely better for that.

Why is 4870 150w but 4870x2 250w? What happened to the other 50w? :p

That link is old, with old info. The single x2 pcb is the difference

It could also be the shared memory. I don't know how much power 512MB of GDDR5 RAM uses, though, so it's just an idea.

------------------------------ Pentium Dual-Core @ 3.33Ghz (333mhz x10)
4GB All Componets DDR2 800
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
Visontek HD 4850 512MB GDDR3

MCM right, lets hope so, thats very innovative though and might require the cores to be very close together. Anyway, I see it as two rocks in apond, the rocks are cores and the water is the mem. the water flows freely from one to the other, without it, its like there is a wall, preventing sharing.

Im not wasting my money on a 4870 512, i would much rather get the 1 GB. Reason: THe 4870 was supposed to be 1 GB but ATi cut it to 512 due to shortage of gddr5, in order to keep the cards at a targeted price range of 299 and below
