My laptop has 2 memory slots. It already came with 1 GB stick. My brother gave me 2 GB Stick ram. Could It be more beneficial to put it in :

a. 2 GB + 1 GB
b. 2 GB (remove the old 1 GB)?

The maximun ram it the motherboard support is 4 GB? (i'm using windows XP).

Thanks,

Size doesn't matter as long as they're ddr2. They may not run in dual channel and they may run at the speed of the slowest stick. They should work.

q6600 with take vista 64 fine.

In terms of RAM, size doesn't matter nor does manufacturer (although they can help for compatibility), what is important is that the type (DDR2 or DDR3) and speed are the same. You can use DIMMS that are different speeds but they will be limited to the slower speed.
