After I graduate in two months I plan on upgrading my PC and the gpu is one of the upgrades I plan on making. I currently have and plan after the upgrade to keep my 17" LCD monitor which has a max res of 1280x1024. At that resolution would the 4850/70 be bottlenecked with a wolfdale core2duo noticiably or would I probably be better off with either the HD 3850/70 or GF 8800GT/GTS?

No reliable benchmarks for the 4870 yet. The 4850 beats out the 8800GT and 8800GTS in most games (but not all) the 9800GTX and the 4850 seem to swap positions and the 9800 has dropped to $200.00 at newegg (EVGA) At 1280x1024 price might be the biggest factor in choosing a card.

Just get g92 8800gts/9800gts/hd4850. They perform about the same. Hd3870 is significantly lower.

Performance can vary quite a bit depending on the game. See those 2, for example.

Unreal Tournament 3: 8800gts handily beat hd4850. At lower resolutions, even 9600gt perform better.

Quake 4: 4850 far outperforms gtx280 on higher resolutions.

You do not have to upgrade monitor right now, even with better graphics card. Keep in mind, as games get more graphics intensive, the screensize that you can play at smoothly will shrink. A year from now, the 1280x1024 resolution might be the highest your card can handle anyway.
