Note that I'm upgrading my old system and keeping some stuff. My budget is $600 and I'm hoping to build a mid-range (probably low end to you guys) gaming machine. I won't be doing any OC/SLI and I don't have a ton of peripherals and such. My OS will be XP Pro (possibly x64 edition?). I want to keep my ide(pata) hd and be able to boot from it with the new mobo.

Keeping:

  • IDE hd
  • external usb 2.0 hd
  • mATX case
  • mouse/keyboard/etc
  • IDE dvdrw

Upgrading:

  • video card
  • processor
  • memory
  • psu
  • mobo
  • ?

EDIT: OLD BUILD! 3 posts down for NEW BUILD
Here's what I have sofar. I'm not very good with hardware so I need some advice.

Question: Why keep IDE drives? They imped airlow with large cables, but I guess on a budget, you cut corners.

Video card- Wait for the new cards out by July- don't upgrade right this moment
CPU- E7200 and overclock
RAM- spend $5 more for the same stuff with 4-4-4-12 timings
PSU- Get the 500W version
Motherboard- Fine

Okay, here's my new build. I'm buying sometime today and still open to suggestions. I'm not going to switch to the 4-4-4-12 gskill ram, but am thinking of getting the 4-4-4-12 kingston ($12 more) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820134125

He says he is keeping a microATX case, so I would think so. :)
