Looks pretty good, though I wonder about the quad-core. Any specific thing you're gonna be doing that requires more than two cores?

If it's mid-range, then you don't need 4GB of RAM or the Quad Core. Either save yourself the money and get yourself 2GB of RAM and an equally fast (or faster) dual-core or pool the saved money into a better part somewhere else, like maybe a 1920 x 1200 capable monitor. Also you should really wait a week or two and see how the HD Radeon 4850 performs. Might do as good or better than the 8800GTS for less.

I plan on playing games, and other than that, just web surfing and office apps. I want this computer to last, so I figure the q6600 would outlast performance wise, the e8400 or similar. 4GB of RAM and 2GB of RAM are very similarly priced, so I figured it would be worth it. As much as I hate to do it, waiting for the 4850's might be a good idea, but really, theres never a good time to buy in this market :\. If anyone has any other views please share :) .

Also, I just read the "Best Graphics Card for the Money: June 2008" here, and it brings up the 9600gt in sli as a good solution around $300, which is within my price range. Although, I would have to change my mobo to an nVidia chipset. Any ideas?

Don't do it, whoever made that suggestion made a very poor one. (SLI)

Like Schnell said wait for the 4850s.

How often do you upgrade? Under 2 years go dual core, over 2 years go quad core.

Make sure the RAM has timings of 4-4-4-12 not 5-5-5-15.

Ok, I will not go SLI.

Any idea when the 4850's will hit?

I do not plan on upgrading within the next 2 years, so I'll go q6600.
