Memory Ratio

I have an i7 920 with an MSI x58 Eclipse motherboard. This might be kind of a dumb question, but how does the memory ratio affect performance? I understand that to achieve the desired memory clock speed it needs to be adjusted as I overclock the baseclock, but how does the ratio affect performance?
