Let's say that you just bought a cpu and heatsink should you lap it? This is my worse case scenario. After lapping cpu, you're warranty is gone, so if the product was defective b4 you lapped it. ur screwed. Second scenario is that you lap the heatsink and the fan was broken does this void you're warranty to replace the fan

For most cases, its not necessary to lap your cpu or heatsink. Just my $0.02

First you check the surface of the CPU and HS, best way is glass and ketchup, looking through the glass. After doing this for your last 15 CPUs and 5 HS you get to know what is bad.

Then you install it all and monitor temps under load and idle. Then you overclock.

If the temps are good, no worries, if your unhappy, then you remount the HS 3 more times and retest, maybe you mounted it wrong. If still bad decide which to lap first. Lap one, then retest. etc etc.

Never lap right away on a whim. Take it slow, smart, and research.

Actually, I prefer a machinist's straight edge to see if a HSF is square. Window glass is often not square, but one can usually get some plate glass from a broken sheet pretty reasonable. (By 'square', I mean flat in two directions across the surface.)

Or you could use those sharks with laser beams attached to their heads. Trouble is, they don't sit still long enough to get a good look. :)
