I'm building a new htpc/mid-level gaming computer and plan on including an 8800gt. My main concern is that the card doesn't add too much heat to the case and doesn't run too loudly. Any particular brands, models or price descriptions to look out for, beyond just any well ranked dual slot card with external exhaust? The recent price reductions have really piqued my interest, but I want to make sure they are not just trying to offload inferior models.

I've never added an aftermarket cooler to a gpu, but if that is the best solution I could go that route. Likewise, if an HD 3870 or 9600gt (4850 is probably a little bit out of my price range/overkill) would be a better choice in your opinion I would also like to hear that. Main use will be HD video playback, currently gaming on 1360x768, but likely will add a second monitor at 1920x1200 within the year.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814130359 Theres an EVGA card with a dual slot /external exhaust cooler on it. Should meet your needs quite nicely. There is an ECS card with a big passive cooler on it, but it doesnt feature external exhaust, so probably isnt a good choice for what your doing.

Come on. You know you want that 4850. How can you possibly resist?

4850 would be too hot in a HTPC. It puts a lot of heat back into the case.

Look at 8800GTS 512mb for dual slot cooling with external exhaust. Or look for 9600GT which runs very cool. My 8800GT hits about 80C gaming.

You probably also have the single slot cooler on your GT. I have the MSI version, has a very nice dual slot cooler on it, Ive never seen it go over 60C.
