What is the error message, "no boot device" or something like that?

1st of all make sure that the BIOS option is set to boot from the SATA/SCASI HDD - Check your motherboard's manual about the setting

what XP version are u using ? is it SP2? make sure that u have all the latest updates in your service pack

U may also need to install the Sata Drivers i.e u may have to format the Sata hard disk to get xp running

it's sp2 but i've already had it running twice but when i took out the other hdd it stopped working and it is set to boot from the sata drive 1st

Perform a repair install with your XP disk and have a F6 disk for your system with the sata drivers on it and load the drivers if required.

Check the SATA cable and make sure it didn't come loose.

Boot to the CD recovery console and type fixmbr. The link is to fix the MBR that was taken over by grub when installing linux, but I believe the same problem can occur with NTloader. Give it a try you have nothing to loose. I had the same problem when I installed Vista RC1 and then removed it, so depending on how you did the installing it may work.

Zorg is right. fixmbr fixes alot of problems. I always use it when recovering from GRUB bootloader crap. Also, make sure you're booting from the right partition/drive.

The funny thing is that I know better to disconnect all other drives before installing a new OS, and yet I still get caught occasionally.
