I recently turned an old P4 3.0GHz machine into a NAS using FreeNAS. I would like to perform some tests on file transfer times to see how long it takes to transfer files between two HDDs in the same system compared to a HDD to the NAS over my LAN. Does anyone know of software that will time the file transfers? Or do you have any suggestions for a good way to time this that doesn't involve sitting and staring at my monitor?

Basically, when I work on PCs I back them up first. I am trying to figure out whether it is faster to back them up to the NAS, eSATA HDD, or USB HDD.

Thanks!

If I've got my numbers correct, disks are ~70MBps, USB 2.0 maxes out at around 30MBps, a gigabit network connection at 125MBps, and eSATA . . . well performance varies:

Off the top, USB 2.0 is not a contender. As to the other two, YMMV.
