4870 review!!! Hope its real

Woohoo! Yeah! Great! for 299!!!

I gotta say i am impressed, I'm just wondering how long will it take for the official launch of the 4870, and then of course the 4870x2.

I am also interested in the RV740, it is more powerful than the hd3870, and should make a price point of like 150-ish I'd have to assume, making it a killer mainstream card. even the 4670 and the 4650 seem like extremely powerful value cards, well based on what is rumored to be there GPU hardware make-up...

So I have to see where this is going, but so far, woodwork ati, now keep up the momentum is all, and AMD should be pimping you out al night long!  

But temps ARE scary...

Someone posted elsewhere that a bios update is due on these cards, allowing for the fan control to work better. Also, that should drop the idle core speeds as well

I like this card a lot, it dealt with Crysis good, unlike the previous generation of ATI cards.

Only issue might be the noise....6500 rpm fan ouch

The 4870 beats the 260 and is only 10% off the 280 for a lot less $$$

the 4870x2 will destroy anything Nvidia can offer, said this before - a 280 gx2 is not possible with the current chip - it's too big, too hot, too much power, and the killer is too complex a PCB required with that fat bus.

It's good to see how the tables can be completely overturned overnight... The ATI boys just need to rub some off this luck off to the AMD boys and hope 45nm phenom can deliver...

nvidia better drop the prices of the gtx200 series and soon. im hoping to step up from my 9800 gtx by end of july

Looks like ATI finally got a handle on the AA problems. Hell in HL2 the 4870 actually performs better than the 280 at 8xAA.

8xAA is sooo doable, its like free at 4xAA

Seems like a good review. Puts the 4870 and the gtx 260 very close in performance. Pretty much a driver race for the 2 cards. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nvidia drop their gtx prices by $100 in the next few weeks so the 260 and the 4870 are about the same price.

Problem there as it gets real tight on their profit margins. Almost a gig of memory, 512 bus, all those wires/connects, plus the yields on the die arent that great, plus its size. Lotsa uphill for nVidia from here on out

Wow, I really like those numbers for $300. I think this might be the first time I buy a card right at launch.

Detailed review, but results are scarely good - this casts a shade of doubt by itself   High res with AA gets on the GTX280 heels for half a price? Give me one of those, better two  

I think we'll soon be able to name the real 8800GTX killer after all these years of refreshes and total failures (ie. 2900XT).

Man that gets my blood pumping!!! I am glad I did not get a 280GTX.

Now to wait for launch, going to get me two of those to run my 22" 1600X1050 screen. Should run most games on fairly high if not max at really good FPS.

Only negatives are those power consumption numbers, not to mension the temps and noise. Might have to get a couple of after market coolers like the passive S1s from Arctic Cooling.

Do you guys think that a 750W Corsair will be enough to run two of these safely? I really dont want to go 1K, the prices are high and im already over budget.

Those power consumption figures are quite high, I'm starting to have doupts how feasible the 4870X2 is going to be after all...

Other than that it seems to be a great card. DAAMIT sure needed something like this, maybe they'll even get back to black because of this.

The graphics division might. The CPU department hasn't got a hope though, every bit of money they make goes into a pay rise for Hector.

Agreed, hence my master plan of crossfiring two of these babies. But will a 750W PSU handle them + 9450 + HDD + 4GB RAM? I thought I was on the safe side but damn now I am thinking 1K might not be enough. We all saw what happened with SLI 280GTX and the 1K PSU in Anands review.

Id wait for a few days. Get a better feel as to whats needed

I agree with what James said, a GX2 280 or whatever it wouldnt be called is impossible without leaping way over the border of absurdity, I say leaping because the GTX 200 cards have already steped over the border.

The card would be the entire length of cases, require 3 or 4 power plugs, 3 slot cooling, and the PCI interface would probably break off the PCB inside the socket from all the weight, im suprised the current cards dont do that to begin with.

I'm still waiting for Nvidia's Can Of Whoop-Ass. Perhaps GTX 290+++?

I gotta say the power draw of the total system with the card is a bit surprising too.. 378watts vs 320 watts for 4850 or 341 watts for 3870X2.

Actually the 4870 seems to draw more power than a 9800 GX2! Come to think of it I think their power numbers have to be off.. but I could be wrong I guess :S

The high power draw/temperatures is probably because PowerPlay isn't supported until 8.7 for these cards

Nvidia 9800 GX2 Is STILL the best card on the market.I will not sell my 8800 GTS 512 ,I will just buy another one.Is that a good Idea?

All those power consumptions figures look messed up.....according to those stats under load the 9800gx2 only uses 18w more then a single 9800gtx, surely thats wrong?

I like the performance, but the heat, the (possible) noise and the power consumptions make it look like the gtx280, albeit a very cheap gtx280. I was hoping to x fire and get some serious performance.....but i think that the power needed for that would be daft.
