Reason - gets rid of annoying messages.
Bad Thing - if the web site you are going to is made to do bad things, you will blow right past the warnings.

Usually this type of issue happens on Intranet sites where they don't setup all the web pages to 100% spec. The reason you see the warning is that a site that does not have the proper certificates can be a spoof of a real site, and this warns you if what the site reports to the browser security matches what it's trying to show you as the user.
