What kind of machine do you have now? It may be worth it saving up more if possible to get a better build. Also, it would be VERY helpful if you are willing to over clock.

Assuming you are, something like this could work.

GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128337

Intel Pentium E2180 Allendale 2.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116052

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231098

All that is $227 shipped! If your willing to spend $293 you can go with a E7200, which would lead to 3MB Cache, and a much higher overclock, and its 45nm.

mushkin 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory x2 (For 4 GB) $100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146732

That puts it at $300 including shipping...
or just go 2 GB, with shipping for $250
eventually you could change that 8500 GT for a Radeon 3450, and under Vista Hybrid it with the Chipset for reasonable performance for about another $50.
