I'm thinking of selling my 8800GTS 512MB and swapping it for a 4870 but I'm curious if the 4870 would work well with my system.

I'm currently running this setup:

ASUS P5K-E
8GB DDR2 800
Q6600 @ stock 2.4ghz w/ a Arctic Freezer Pro 7
750w PC Power & Cooling PSU

Would OCing my CPU to 3.0ghz be a definite must if I do happen to get my hands on a 4870 and is my fan up to par if I do want to OC it? Is everything else compatible with the ATI card?

Excuse my novice questions, any help is appreciated!

You should definately oc. A q6600 without oc is a waste. :p

But if it's a single 4870, it shouldn't bottleneck even at stock. It's a long way from bottlenecking your current g92 8800gts, which is equal to a 4850. A 4870 is better, but not so much that it'll create major bottlenecking.

you cpu will not limit the cards power.

if you look at the reviews here.. you can have a core 2 duo, and still pull maximum potential outta the gpu.

nowadays its games arnt too dependent on cpu as they are gpu.

yes you can do it, and it would be fine.

you can OC the q6600. that chip made to be clocked.

Sure, it'd be a good improvement

My only question is why are you running that CPU at stock o.O

Depending on your games, resolution, and fsaa level it could be a nice boost in performance. What games is the GTS letting you down in?

As far as OC'in, the freezer 7 pro is very good for OC'in. It depends on ambient room temps, case airflow, and indivdual cpu & mobo. You could hit 3.5-3.6GHz with that cooler. I ran 3.2GHz for a bit with the stock Intel cooler, but as summer months came I quickly backed mine back to 3.0GHz as my room temps climbed 8-10 degrees F. I'll be putting a freezer on mine I bought a while ago but haven't installed yet. I need it this Summer as my Q at 3.0GHz is now hitting 60C in heavy gaming.

The AF7 Pro is an excellent cooler for the money, and I agree that 3.2 (8x400) is certainly within its capability, however I would hesitate to count on it at 3.6G, I think that is exceeding its comfort zone. For that, I think I would be tempted to go with an OCZ V2, Xigmatek 1283 or a TRUE.

Don't sell your 8800GTS. You can use it as a PhysX processor :) .

Like I said, it depends on ambient room temps and case airflow. A 65 degree (F) basement and Antec 1200 vs 80 degree sun room and Antec Overture isn't going to yield the same results :)
