Three possibilities come to mind.

1. Your laptop has one hard drive called C:, and an optical drive (CD or DVD) called D:. Every drive device must have a letter name, whether it is a hard drive or not.

2. Your laptop actually has two physical hard drives inside, but you won't see anything unless you open the case and go poking around (NOT recommended).

3. Your one physical hard drive unit has been Partitioned into two parts, and each is treated (logically) as a completely separate drive with its own name.
