I'm building a computer for my buddy, and I ordered him a nice Radeon 4850 that's coming in tomorrow.

I currently have an old(ish) X1950 Pro with a Zalman VF900 cooler on it. What I want to do is put the Zalman on his 4850 to keep the temperatures down for long-term use.

I have read a few things about it, and I'm pretty sure the VF900 will work with the 4850.

My real question is this: Will the stock 4850 cooler fit on my X1950 Pro?

I know that the 4850 cooler is basically the same design as the 3850 cooler, but my card is obviously a few generations older than even that card. I've looked at a couple die shots and it looks feasible, but I was wondering if anyone could give me any more info on this.

Comparing my 3850 to my x1950pro, it looks like I could make it fit. It looks like it will work more likely than not, but I can't say for sure.

Why don't you just give it a try? It could just fit, and if it doesn't, then no big deal, right?

Good point.

That's what I'll probably end up doing. I just wanted to feel at least slightly informed before I busted out the rubbing alcohol and thermal paste. ;)
